Basic Tools To Drill A Water Well
1. The Drilling Rig
The PortaDrillMini is the most popular compact, portable water well drilling rig in the world. This may very well be the smallest rotary air/ mud/ water/ foam injection drill rig with adjustable, mechanical pulldown pressure capabilities. One-man operation. Easily maneuvered. Low overhead cost.
2. Drill Steel
The drill steel connects the drill bit to the PortaDrillMini and is a conduit for the method used for drilling fluid injection. First decide your drilling project depth requirements, then order enough drill steel to drill the entire depth of your well. Each drill steel section is 5 Ft. in length.
3. Drill Bits
The drill bits are attached to the end of the string of drill steel and cut through various formations you encounter. The secret to the best optimal drilling with the PortaDrillMini is to properly match the drill bit to the rock formation you are encountering. There are various types and designs of drill bits. Tri-cone bits (also known as roller cone bits) have a tungsten carbide surface, which provides an extremely hard cutting edge. Drag bits cut extremely well but tend to wander (deviate) as they drill. Determine the diameter requirements of your drilling project and order the correct drill bits for your rock formation you will encounter.
4. Well Casing
The well casing is the outer pipe of your water well. Casings are required when the walls of the well tend to collapse or you are drilling in an unconsolidated formation. You begin to install the well casing after you started a pilot hole and have determined an unconsolidated formation has been encountered. The casing is lowered or hammered into the hole and keeps the hole open. You will need the same amount of casing as drill steel. Make sure you can acquire enough steel casing locally for your drilling project.
5. Air Hammer (Optional)
Air operated hammers for driving steel casings, safe operation with air valve operational controls for the operator used on the ground from safe distance. Order this air-powered hammer for driving your steel casing needs.
6.Well Screen
The well screen is a section of pipe perforated with thousands of small slots. The screen attaches to the bottom of the well casing and filters out sand and sediment from your water. Using a well screen prolongs the life of your well. ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES -Filters out solids that can damage your pump, but is not serviceable. Option - install a stainless steel screen in the tee on the surface well pipe. This screen can be removed and cleaned with out removing or disturbing the well suction pipe.
7. Mud Pump or Drilling Fluid Circulation (Optional)
Used in mud injection drilling methods for drilling unconsolidated formations where the walls of the well tend to cave in or collapse. Drill mud flushes the cuttings out of the hole as you drill. Besides using far less water, the re-circulating pump allows you to use drilling mud to improve your well drilling conditions success. We have Gasoline as well as Diesel units available.
8. Drilling Fluid Additives (drill fluid mud, drill foam, polymer gel agents)
These additives aid in removing cuttings from the well and help maintain the walls to keep sand and gravel layers from collapsing. Drilling additives can only be used with a re-circulation system.
